Recycling Education at the University
REdU
November 14, 2006 Meeting Minutes
Mission Statement: REdU is an effort to establish Recycling Liaisons in departments across campus. Liaisons will be our front line champions and will disseminate information presented along to others in their department. They will also be tagged within their department as a person to ask regarding recycling questions. They can also bring questions and concerns back from their areas to WMS staff so that we may address them.

- Introductions
- Guest Presenters: Mary Ellen Lyon and Steve Sinelli, Property Disposition
The guest speakers gave a presentation on the role of Property Disposition. They covered the process for selling of surplus assets as well as their role in environmental stewardship. The presentation and a Declaration of Surplus form are available on the REdU webpage.
- Discussion
There was a question about how to dispose of large amounts of electronic equipment. There are some larger drop off sites for this material on campus and the materials are then picked up on site. For more information contact OSEH at 647-1143.
There was also discussion on how to clean out a hardrive. There are complete directions for this on the Property Disposition website (the specific page is http://propertydisposition.umich.edu/html/compprocedure.html). Removing and shredding the hardrive before sending the computer to Property Disposition is anther option.
A question was raised on what to do if you would like to send some University material to a non-profit organization. The University of Michigan is not allowed to give items away, however, if it is something that wouldn’t sell at Property Disposition or would burden an office/department/building to send, contact PD to talk about possibly redistributing these materials. Situations are reviewed by the General Counsel. Special pricing can also be arranged for non-profits.
- America Recycles Day
America Recycles Day is on Nov. 15th. Waste Management Services gave out free travel mugs with hot chocolate on the Central and North Campus Diags on Nov. 15th and 16th from 9 am -12 pm. We were encouraging using reusable rather than disposable mugs.
- RecycleMania Preview
RecycleMania is a 10 week nationwide collegiate recycling competition taking place Jan. 28th-April 7th, 2007. Last year UM focused only on Residence Halls, but this year will be targeting all of campus and focusing on waste minimization in addition to recycling. Go to www.recyclemaniacs.org for more information. We are looking to REdU members to help get the word out and we are open to any new ideas on how to promote RecycleMania.
- Next Meeting
The next meeting will be on Jan. 23rd, 2007, location TBD.
