Recycling Education at the University
REdU
April 18, 2006 Meeting Minutes
Mission Statement: REdU is an effort to establish Recycling Liaisons in departments across campus. Liaisons will be our front line champions and will disseminate information presented along to others in their department. They will also be tagged within their department as a person to ask regarding recycling questions. They can also bring questions and concerns back from their areas to WMS staff so that we may address them.
Attendees:
| Tracy Artley, | Waste Management Services |
| Lou Cruzen, | College of Engineering |
| Alison Richardson, | Waste Management Services |
| Sally Smith, | Mechanical Engineering |
- Introductions
- Follow Up to February's Meeting
Mixed Container Bins: At February's meeting, members asked about obtaining mixed container bins. If additional bins are needed inside the building, contact the Plant Operations Call Center at 647-2059 to submit a request.
- Presentation: Bulky Items: After Your Dock...
- What is a bulky item?
- Anything that shouldn't go in your dumpster
- wood, pallets, scrap metal, furniture, appliances, electronics
- These items can't go into the dumpster because they cannot be compacted in our trucks
- How should bulky items be disposed of?
- Pallets, scrap wood, and scrap metal can be placed next to the dumpster
- For General Fund buildings, we will usually pick up the material
- If it is questionable or is from a Customer Pay building, we will contact the BFM
- Please contact us if you have other items (appliances, furniture)
- BFM's can contact Waste Management and request a pick up
- How should electronic items be disposed of?
- Usable Electronics
- Usable electronics should go to Property Disposition
- Broken Electronics
- These are not necessarily bulky, but they should not be placed in the dumpster
- By State regulation, no material with a circuit board or a monitor can go into the landfill as they are considered hazardous material. Contact OSEH for disposal, 647-1143.
- Service Charges
- Scrap wood pick up: $18/cubic yard
- Scrap metal pick up: $18/cubic yard
- Other materials not in a dumpster: $18/cubic yard
- Where do bulky items go?
- Wood
- Untreated wood goes to Onyx landfill to be chipped for mulch
- Treated wood goes to Onyx landfill and is buried
- Pallets
- If they are in good condition, they are collected and taken to Grounds where a company comes and takes them, refurbishes them if needed, and reuses them
- If they are in poor condition, they are placed with other scrap wood to go to Onyx landfill to be mulched
- Scrap Metal
- Taken to a scrap recycler where the metals are separated by type and sold to those who can use it
- Furniture

- University purchased and in poor condition, place it on the dock and contact Waste Management
- Not University purchased and is in usable condition (i.e. it can be donated), contact Waste Management
- Appliances
- If it contains a circuit board, it must go to OSEH (anything with a digital display has a circuit board
- University purchased and in good condition, it goes to Property Disposition
- University purchases and in poor condition, it is usually recycled with scrap metal
- Not University purchased, as with Move Out items, it can be donated to local non-profits
- Recycling Matters
The Spring 2006 issue of Recycling Matters is out and available on our website, www.recycle.umich.edu. If you would like a hardcopy, email Recycling (get address) (38.107.191.117).
- Discussion
There was a question about how to recycle electronic media (CD's, DVD's, floppy disks, video and audio cassettes, slides). If you have a small amount, they can be put in a campus mail envelope and sent to Waste Management Services at 1655 Dean Rd. campus zip: 2159. If you have a larger amount, contact Waste Management Services to arrange a pick up.
The group also discussed what to do with carpet. If there is a small amount, pile it next to the dumpster. For larger amounts, contact Waste Management Services. As for carpet rolls, place these next to the paper dumpster and Waste Management Services will pick these up separately.
Recyclable polystyrene was also discussed. The type of polystyrene that we are able to recycle must be able to snap over your knee. The material must also be white (no colors), clean, and dry. We also collect packing peanuts bagged separately.
- Next Meeting
