REdU Meeting Minutes-7/26/05

REdU is an effort to establish Recycling Liaisons in departments across campus. Liaisons will be our front line champions and will disseminate information presented along to others in their department. They will also be tagged within their department as a person to ask regarding recycling questions. They can also bring questions and concerns back from their areas to WMS staff so that we may address them.

Attendees:

Tracy Artley, Waste Management Services
Lynne Chaimowitz (facilitator) Waste Management Services
Paul Clark, Building Facilities Manager, Lawyer’s Club
Debra LeFree, Dana Building
Alison Richardson, Waste Management Services
Christina Scheffer, Student Activities Building
Troy Showerman, Waste Management Services
Sally Smith, Mechanical Engineering, Facility Assistant
Carol Volker, Office of the VP and Secretary, Fleming Administration Building
Julie Weatherbee, University Library/Digital Lab
Lynette Wright, University Stores

Technology and Recycling:

Packaging

Lynne discussed which packaging materials are recyclable or reusable. Waste Management Services can collect and recycled only polystyrene with a #6 on it. Acceptable polystyrene is completely white and rigid (i.e. it will snap when broken over knee-demonstration by Troy). It was discussed whether the University could specify to Dell to only ship computer equipment in recyclable polystyrene- Lynette will look into this for future meetings. WMS also collects packing peanuts and bubble wrap for reuse.

Electronic Media

Waste Management can collect and recycle audio and video cassettes, CD’s, jewel cases, films reels, floppy disks, etc. Waste Management is not able to erase material but few people have access the electronic media and it is shredded by the recycler. If there are concerns about this, it is best to destroy the information before it is picked up for recycling. Members discussed if it would be beneficial to have central collection containers for electronic media. It was decided that electronic media should be collected and the bins are to be determined at a future meeting. Also, the collection of cell phones (via campus mail) and transparencies were discussed.

Printing

Lynne encouraged members to set their printers on duplex and print double sided whenever possible to conserve paper.

Inkjet and Laser Cartridges

WMS collects inkjet cartridges from personal printers and laser toner cartridges from larger printers to send to a remanufacturer. These can be sent to Waste Management through campus mail or we can arrange for a pick up.

Future Schedule:

Members decided on monthly meetings the third Tuesdays of the month from 2-3 pm. The next meeting will be Tuesday August 16th, location TBA.

August, 2005
